Real Madrid could temporarily overtake Barcelona at the LaLiga summit if they overcome Sevilla in this match, with the current league leaders not hosting Granada until Sunday evening. Zinedine Zidane’s side are level on points with Barcelona at present despite having drawn three of their last four league games, while they have failed to score in two of their last three top-flight clashes. However, the Santiago Bernabeu outfit enter this match following after beating city rivals Atletico Madrid to the Spanish Super Cup title last weekend.
Sevilla enter this clash sitting fourth in the LaLiga table as a result of their promising top-flight campaign to date, and they can move to within two points of the leaders with a victory over Madrid. The visitors head to the Santiago Bernabeu following a mixed run of form which has seen them pick up four points from their last three league matches, but they did seal an emphatic 5-0 victory over Copa Del Rey opponents Escobedo in their last outing. Today’s clash also sees Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui return to the Spanish capital following his unsuccessful stint as Madrid manager in 2018.
The players are now emerging from the tunnel as kick-off edges closer.
Zidane will demand his side show more creativity in the final third during the second period, with Jovic having looked isolated in attack for large portions of the opening half. Madrid have registered just four attempts on goal so far, with all of these having been from outside the box, and there can be no doubt the hosts need to be more incisive in attack. Meanwhile, Sevilla will be relatively satisfied with their first-half display while they are perhaps unlucky to not be in front, even though it looked like a clear foul in the build-up to De Jong's disallowed effort.
The two sides are now back on the pitch ahead of the second half.
That's all for now. Thanks for following live coverage of this LaLiga clash!
Madrid have now climbed to the LaLiga summit ahead of Barcelona's clash with Granada tomorrow, and they will be looking to continue their winning run when they face Unionistas in the Copa Del Rey in midweek before their trip to face Real Valladolid next weekend. Meanwhile, Sevilla now have a chance to bounce back from this defeat with back-to-back home matches during the coming week, with both Levante and Granada travelling to face Lopetegui's men.
